. a bleak tone from some in congress sunday on reaching a deal with the white house to avoid the fiscal cliff. president obama and congress are on christmas vacation. it will be thursday before talks resume to try and prevent automatic tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect january first. andrew spencer has the latest. analysts say many shoppers haven't been in the holiday spirit when it comes to spending money. the four-day black friday weekend that started on thanksgiving was strong. sales rose 2-point-7 percent. but analysts says sales fell 4-point-3 percent for the week ending december 15th. and last week they forecasted holiday spending to decrease another 2-point- 5 percent. previous expectations were for a 3-point-3 percent increase in spending. the saint anthony foundation needs help to reach its goal of collecting 5-hundred hams during the 25th annual curbside donation drive. according to the foundation, they collected a hundred hams. that's just 20-percent of their goal. the foundation hoped to get another 400 hams sunday and today. if you would like to donate a ham yo

been he was the front runner to be president obama's choice as secretary of defense. no announcement. the silence is deafening from the white house. but the opposition already mounting. a lot of criticism coming from both republicans and democrats about some of hagel's positions while he served in the senate. i have to tell you over the last several years he's been known as somewhat of an independent maverick. concerns about his position on iran, was he strong enough about iran being a terrorist state, about voting for sanctions against iran. but a lot of it folksing on his his position with israel. a remark he made back in 2007 about the "jewish lobby in washington." a lot of pro-israeli groups voting their concerns. i want to play you just now a bit of a commercial already running on television opposing hag hagel, even though he's not nominated. >> president obama says all options are on the table. hagel says military action is not a feasible option. president obama for secretary of defense chuck hagel is not a responsible option. >> but if the white house was thinking of nominatin

that is most antagonistic toward president obama. i think he got 30% + of white men to vote for him. he was down in those categories, but white men are the heart and soul of it. you say he is the most divisive. i think we live in very divisive times in terms of our politics, in terms of our media spending it is highly polarized here in the congress. people who do not want to compromise see compromise as a dirty word and are worried they are threatened by the other side spending the whole idea of politics having to see good in the other side and were there is possibility of common ground has gone away. i do not think you are wrong in saying that president obama's era is one of the most divisive in american history and i question whether or not he has a divisive personality. i think his approval ratings in terms of -- he is close to 50%. personally, there are lots of americans including white men who like him, but they do not like his policy. the economic policies in particular tend to be highly divisive in america at this moment. host: part of his speech talked about his hopes going forw
